Delonix regia (fire tree) belongs to the Leguminosae family. It goes by many names including flamboyant tree, flame tree, peacock flower and royal poinciana. It grows to 15 m or more. The leaves are doubly compound to 30 cm long with small leaflets. The leaves are shed prior to flowering. The beautiful flowers are red or orange, to 12 cm across. The flat pods are 50 cm long. A native to Madagascar, introduced to the Philippines in early Spanish times, now widely planted throughout the country.
